Ratings Criteria

Course Requirements

Golf course ratings on the Teeing It Up ONTARIO website are comparative and based on play during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Because ratings may not apply after course improvements or re-design, golf courses may request re-evaluation.

To be fairly profiled, reviewed and rated by Teeing It Up ONTARIO, golf courses must be:

  • a public or semi-private course
  • an 18-hole design (minimum)
  • 5800 yards or longer
  • par 68 or higher

Golf Course Rating Criteria

 
Setting:   The geographic qualities that contribute to the design, appearance and backdrops of the course.

Conditioning:   The overall conditions of the tee boxes, fairways, rough, bunkers, greens and course perimeters.

Design:   Variety in hole shape, difficulty, length, slope, hazards in play, pin positions, contours / tiers of greens.

Shot making:   Test of accuracy, length and finesse using most clubs without overemphasizing one shot or club.

Scoring:   The overall difficulty / fairness of the course for players of varying abilities using different tee boxes.

Practice facilities:   The availability of a driving range, putting and / or chipping green(s), practice bunker(s).

Ambience, aesthetics:   Impressions and memories of the course, combined with the quality of its scenic vistas.

 
Golf Course Rating Designations

Suitable for recreational golf only, but still an enjoyable experience.
Well designed & maintained. Challenging & suitable for tournament play.
Unique setting and / or design features. Above average course conditions.
Outstanding setting and design features, course conditions, facilities & service.
World-class facility. Exceptional setting, design, course conditions, facilities & service.
