Rene Muylaert
Peninsula Lakes Golf Course & Sparrow Lakes Golf Course
One of Ontario's premier golf course design architects
For more than four decades Rene Muylaert has criss-crossed Ontario shaping the Ontario golf landscape. While his name may not be included among Canada's greatest golf course architects, he has nearly fifty (50) layouts to his credit here in Ontario, including Heritage Hills Golf Course and, here in Niagara, the new nine at Sparrow Lakes Golf Course. |
 |
| His big break in the golf design business came in 1960 when he was asked to be the greens keeper for a new course to be built, the Chinguacousy CC, (now the Caledon CC). The architect originally hired for the project declined and the developer asked Muylaert to step in and design the course. A year later, Muylaert was asked to design nearby Glen Eagle Golf Course and, by 1965, golf course design had become a fulltime endeavour. |
| Design Style
Muylaert specialized in building inexpensive courses on relatively small properties, moving very little earth and having never spent more than $ 4 million on any course. "On every job, I learned a little more. I didn't work under anybody. I did it my way. I tried to follow the land." |
 |
The bulk of Muylaert's work can be found in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), just north of the GTA and throughout southwestern Ontario and includes DiamondBack, St. Andrew's Valley, Horseshoe Resort - Valley, Nobleton Lakes, Pheasant Run, Hawk Ridge, Heritage Hills, and here in Niagara, Sparrow Lakes and Peninsula Lakes (shown left). |

Peninsula Lakes Golf Course has systematically evolved from gravel pit to one of Niagara's premier golf courses and now boasts 27 championship holes - the Quarry, Hillside and Orchard nines. Each layout makes the most of modest elevation changes, man-made lakes and the natural contours of the landscape and all are well balanced in terms of length, difficulty and playing conditions. The "executive" course at Sparrow Lakes Golf Course (Sparrow - Swallow) makes effective use of the surrounding countryside, numerous ponds / lakes, strategic bunkering and smaller greens to toughen it up. The newer,"championship" layout (Heron) has a decided "links" look - mounding, fescue, few trees, plenty of bunkers. Howver, this layout also includes seventeen new ponds, bringing the water into play on most holes. ( Sparrow Lakes Course Review ) |
