Design work overshadowed by that of uncle, Stanley Thompson

Nicol Thompson was the Superintendent at the Niagara Parks Commission Whirlpool Golf Course and also did some construction and design work for (his uncle) architect Stanley Thompson on some of his many projects - here in Niagara and elsewhere.
When only sixteen, Nicol was hired to help lay out a course for the Brantford G&CC.

At seventeen years of age, Nicol Thompson became a golf professional, finishing second in the 1913 Canadian Open and winning the 1922 Canadian PGA Championship. He served as the club pro at the prestigious Hamilton G&CC, and spent most of his working life there.

His Niagara architectural / design credits include Sawmill Golf Course, Links of Niagara at Willodell and Beechwood G&CC.

Willodell GC of Niagara
A championship-calibre layout from tee to green, the Willodell GC of Niagara (pictured above) is built on a gently rolling landscape and features fairways bounded by mature trees and numerous bunkers. In play on ten holes, a number of ponds and two creeks define the character of the course and the way it plays. The Links of Niagara offers a solid mix of great driving and strategic holes, testy par-3s and good course conditioning.   (Willodell GC of Niagara Review ) Willodell GC of Niagara

Sawmill Golf Course
Characterized by rolling hills, deciduous woodlands and meandering creeks, the golf course blends naturally into the surrounding farmlands. Well-manicured fairways, undulating greens, numerous water hazards and bunkers add to the challenge and beauty of every hole. The course offers a comfortable sequence of holes, beginning with a series of "driving" holes and progressing to the more strategic and demanding finishing holes.   ( Sawmill Golf Course Review )

Beechwood Golf & Country Club
Built over rolling terrain, through woodlots and around numerous ponds, Beechwood G&CC is highly regarded as both a challenging and player friendly course.

Best characterized as a parkland-style golf course, Beechwood G&CC is neither too long nor too "tight" for recreational players, but its design is nevertheless demanding of good course management. Poor play will consistently bring the course's many hazards into play.
